NYDA HP GET-IT Centre, South Africa

ImageThe National Youth Development Agency (previously operating as the National Youth Commission and Umsobomvu Youth Fund) is a South African organisation certified as a GET-IT Centre that is using the GET-IT training to facilitate the mainstreaming of youth development in order for young people to have sustainable livelihoods and active participation in the mainstream economy.

The NYDA GET-IT Centre is focusing on exposing its students to IT, improving their entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, and therefore improving their confidence and attitude towards IT.  For next year, NYDA’s goal is to increase the proportion of people with disabilities among its students up to 15%!

Success stories

A lady who had been running a funeral parlour for almost six years had been outsourcing the development and printing of her marketing materials such as posters because she was reluctant to use a computer, thinking it very difficult. The lady attended the GET-IT training and then bought a computer and a printer for her business.  She hired a full-time employee to start working on the computer and practice producing all the documents that had been outsourced until then. Today, all her employees use the computer for most of their day-to-day running of the business!

Two gentlemen who had been renting a spot in a hairdressing salon and had experience in the beauty business attended the GET-IT training and decided to open up their own business as a result!  With the skills they learned in the training, they started actively looking for opportunities because they felt confident to develop their own business and market it in their community.  One of their salons is in a casino in Polokwane, north of Gauteng.  Their clients are mostly guests staying at the casino hotel.  They can now schedule appointments, making sure they are not double-booked!
