Digital Community Center HP-ORT in Slavutich, Ukraine

ImageSlavutich is a small Ukrainian town where employees from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant live.  These are the people who saved the world from radioactive catastrophe after the explosion of the Nuclear Power Unit in 1986.  Many of them remain unemployed since the closure of the Chernobyl Power Plant.

Today, Slavutich faces the problem of social protection of the Power Plant workers who were laid off during the decommissioning process.  This problem can only be solved through the creation of new enterprises, through the development of science and education, and through the creation of conditions favourable to the development of small and medium enterprises.

In response to this, the HP-ORT Digital Community Center (DCC) in Slavutich was opened in 2003 as a collaborative effort between HP, World ORT, and municipal authorities.  The DCC has been a great success as more than 5,000 students have so far taken courses in DCC-Slavutich.

In 2009, DCC-Slavutich was certified as a GET-IT Centre.  The project’s mission is to provide the citizens of Slavutich with educational services that would develop their ICT skills and their professional competencies crucial to supporting the creation and running of their own business.  The GET-IT Centre’s plan is to train 450 students on the GET-IT curriculum by July 2010.  Specifically, more than 200 students will receive not only computer skills but obtain the basics of a business education that will help their successful professional development.  More than 150 high students will also have the opportunity to improve their skills, which will give them a better chance to find a proper job.
